Standard Institute of Photography photo trip to Ibadan Tourist Centre

A PHOTO TRIP TO BOWER’S TOWER TOURIST CENTRE IBADAN.

Last week two of our photography students from Standard Institute of Photography Ibadan in company of the Director of the Institute took a photo trip to Ibadan Tourist Centre to get pictures to use for their photography project. The Photo trip was fun and mind blowing. The whole ancient city of Ibadan was seen from another perspective through the lenses of our cameras.

About Bower’s Tower Tourist Centre, Ibadan: Bower’s Tower can be seen at the top of Oke-Are in Ibadan. It is an historic monument put up to honour Captain Robert Lister Bower in 1936 – he was the first British Resident in Ibadan, and appointed by the British government to administer the ancient city, which he did between 1893 and 1897. The Bower’s Tower was designed by Taffy Jones, the engineer that designed Mapo Hall.

The tower is 60 feet high and 11 feet square with two entrances and a spiral staircase that leads to the top of the tower. From the summit of the tower, you can see Ibadan round about sprawling before you and appreciate the pre-historicity of the town. The Bower Tower is someplace to check out if you happen to be in Ibadan.

Bower’s Tower is located on the summit of Oke-Are, the highest hill in Ibadan, from which one enjoys a commanding view of the city. Oke-Are (“The Army Chief’s Hill”) is the site central to Igbo-Agala (Agala Forest) in Sapati Area.

The monument was erected in 1836 as a memorial to Captain Robert Lister Bower, the first British resident in Ibadan and the Travelling Commissioner for the interior of Yoruba land (as the stiffly officious British termed his office), South western Nigeria between 1893 and 1897. From the top of the Tower, the ancient city lays before you, spread out in her splendor; but today, getting to the peak of the Tower will not make one see more that 1/3 of the great city of warriors.

Anyone with a good vision can see the Lagos-Ibadan toll gate as well as Ife- Ilesha toll gate from the top of the Tower. One can also see the whole of UCH, University of Ibadan, the Polytechnic of Ibadan, the Adamasinga stadium and the colourful conference of rustic brown metal roofs which covers a larger percentage of the buildings in the city.

Photo trip with my students to Bower’s Tower Tourist Centre, Ibadan

Photography is life. Had a nice time shooting with my students at Bower’s Tower Tourist Centre, Ibadan. It was fun, interesting and very educative for me as a photo journalist. The trip afforded me a rare opportunity of seeing the city of Ibadan from another perspective and a unique angle. Standing at the highest point in Ibadan city (Bower’s Tower at the top of Oke-Are, one of the seven hills in Ibadan), I saw what I have never seen before concerning Ibadan landscape. It reminded me of similar trip to Idanre hill, Akure in Ondo State.

Thanks to my photography students for making me to join them in this trip despite my very busy schedule. I took these selfies with my smartphone.

Learning the business of Photography at Standard Institute of Photography, Ibadan

One thing we do very well at Standard Institute of Photography is to take our professional photography students through all the various aspect of Photography as a Trade/Business. We provide hands-on practical knowledge that helps our students to master the tools of the trade – a very good blend of the theory and practice of professional photography.

We give our students weekly project that help them to strengthen their practical knowledge of the practice of photography. One of such project is to prepare a welding album (including photobook) and framed portrait for a client.

Here we have our students putting the pictures inside the album which marks the last stage of their wedding album project. They sorted the pictures, edited the pictures in Adobe Photoshop, packaged the pictures using DG FotoArt software before taking them to the Photo Lab for printing. The framed portrait was also done by them.

Learning professional photography is fun at Standard Institute of Photography. With our very affordable training fees, you get more value than you can ever get elsewhere including having the opportunity to obtain the Federal Government National Technical Certificate (Modular) in Photographic Practice from NABTEB.
